Changing Conditions

November 24, 2012 By: Runner Leana

Sometimes life gets in the way of the best of intentions for following a training plan.  You have to adapt!  On Wednesday I had an easy 45 min run on the schedule.  The only time I’d be able to run would be first thing in the morning since I was in a training course all day, then had plans in the evening.  A snow storm blew in Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and I was greeted with several fresh inches of snow on the ground.  There was no time to think or waffle.  At 5:30 am I bundled up, pulled my Yaktrax on and headed out.

It was slow going but there was something wonderful about running through fresh snow, in the dark, listening to the crunch of the snow and the squeak of my Yaktrax.IMG_1274Sure, my glasses were fogging up and collecting snow but it was fun out there.  It was a really good way to start the day.IMG_1275On Thursday I was to get a reprieve from my usual hills in the form of an interval run.  I was looking forward to the workout however life had other plans.  I had a very busy day but I managed to find a block of time where I’d be able to head out.  Shortly before my run I lost everything that I had spent the entire morning working on.  ugh.  Now that I was behind I opted to work through lunch and hit the treadmill after work.  Except I had so much to do that I didn’t leave the office until after 7 pm.  Sigh.  I e-mailed coach to ask her how I should adjust my training plans since a run on Thursday just wasn’t happening.

She told me that I could still do the same run on Friday, so after work I was off to the gym!  Normally I’m not a huge fan of the treadmill, but on this day it made sense.  I wanted to make sure I could hit the right speeds and not worry about running in the dark on icy pathways.  Dare I say I actually enjoyed my run on the treadmill??  45 minutes and I was all done.IMG_1290Hey, check it out, my face is the same colour as my bright pink headband!IMG_1292How has your week been?

I totally agree, treadmills are not fun but sometimes they are the only way to get things done and for that reason I love mine. I don’t even work right now and still have trouble fitting everything in, you just gotta do it when you can!

Since I don’t regularly run on a treadmill, I find that I don’t really mind it when I run on them. I don’t have regular access to one, so it is a nice change in routine when I do end up running on one. That being said – there’s a reason I don’t pay for regular access – I’d rather run outside when possible.

This week coming up is going to be a busy one – so I think it will be all lunchtime running…at least it is lighter at that point I guess…(and I’m glad I’m not dodging snow drifts yet)

Wow that’s a lot of snow!!! Fun! (but not for running outside maybe?) I guess I should’nt complain when it’s pouring rain.
