Now that we are into November and daylight savings time has ended it sure does get dark early around these parts! I always try to do my midweek runs on my lunch hour. That way its light out and I don’t have to worry about being too tired, too hungry, too whatever when I get home. This week I’ve been tied up during the day and there has been no choice but to run in the evening.
I had a 45 minute run on Tuesday night and hill repeats last night. Luckily our neighbourhood sidewalks were nice and clear thanks to a few days of nice weather. Even though I live in a pretty safe neighbourhood I found I was a bit jumpy running out there. Wind blowing leaves around and rabbits dashing in front of me made me jump! That’s right, I guess you really have to watch out for those leaves and rabbits…
Last night I wanted to get my hill repeats in since snow was blowing in overnight. I wanted to take advantage of those dry sidewalks while we had them. Luckily I have some good long hills close to home. The weather was starting to change though so it was cooling off and there was a biting wind. Luckily I have some good gear to layer and keep me toasty warm!Long sleeve shirt, slightly heavier half zip top with a hood, my new lululemon Gust Buster Vest, toque, gloves, warm tights and Smartwool socks. The hood was definitely the best thing to have out there. The toque just wasn’t quite enough to keep my ears warm in that chilly wind. I guess what they say is true – there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear.
My two evening runs wound up being great despite being afraid of the dark. Do you run at night? What are your tips for getting out there and enjoying night time runs?
