Whole30: Day 15

January 20, 2014 By: Runner Leana

Here I am…halfway through Whole30.  I thought this would be a good time to recap my experiences so far.

How am I feeling?

Overall pretty good.  My energy levels are normal and my workouts have felt pretty good lately.  I’m hungry for my three meals a day but I haven’t been snackish at all.  I haven’t had those usual energy lows in the afternoon either.

What has been tough?

While I haven’t had any cravings on Thursday I felt a bit overwhelmed between work, workouts and needing to get dinner made.  Neil and I were home late and I missed the ease of being able to just order a pizza.  It wasn’t that I really wanted to eat pizza, I just missed how much easier that would make things.

I’m also having a tough time with post-workout snacks.  Again, I miss the ease of being able to pack a bar to chow down on immediately after my workout.

Bars

I haven’t figured out a nice portable mix of carbs and proteins that I can carry with me.  I’ve just been trying to eat a meal as close to my workout as possible.  I suppose some flavours of Larabars are Whole30 compliant but the program suggests not relying on sugary fruit for your post-workout snack.

The other issue I dealt with last week was food aversions.

Food aversions?

This one is a surprising one for me as I usually like just about anything.  For some reason using coconut oil in our cooking this week has not been palatable.  I also started to feel really turned off by my breakfast.  I’ve been making bowls with a ton of vegetables, some roasted sweet potato and a couple of eggs.  I think it was the sweet potato in the egg that was bothering me.  I’ll be trying to mix it up my breakfasts this week and hopefully that will help!

What about other changes?

I’ve been true to the program and haven’t stepped on the scale but I’ve noticed that my measurements are definitely changing.  I had to buy some new bras this week as my old ones were all way too big all of a sudden!

I’ve noticed my taste buds changing too.  I drank some unsweetened coconut water after my run last weekend and it tasted so sweet to me!

What have we made so far that tastes delicious?

Deconstructed Cabbage Rolls
Moroccan Meatballs
Maldivian Fish Curry
Balsamic Glazed Pork Tenderloin

These are all recipes that I would make again, without a doubt!  So there were go…day 15.

If you’ve done a Whole30 before how did you solve the dilemma of a post-workout snack?

These things are pretty common. After awhile my eggs, avocado and sweet potato breakfasts turned my tummy too. And pre and post run snacks were definitely hard. Have you tried Solana’s Beast Balls yet? They’re like a homemade Luna bar but I found they were one of the best things for during and after working out. And nuts.

(I have to read your first post on Whole 30). Does that mean no coffee? I think that would be the hardest for me. That’s cool about your taste buds. Hitting reset on our taste buds is a great idea!

Nice job so far! That is great you haven’t really had many cravings and your energy levels are up! I am kind of intrigued by Whole 30 but I really love my morning coffee with a splash of half and half and I really love my morning oatmeal breakfast. I know it’s only one month, but I’m just so leary to give those two things up! Haha
