This weekend I lucked out and had company on my long run! Cori was looking to mix things up a bit so I invited her to join me for a run at Nose Hill. I figured I we could rerun the Nose Hill XC race from the week before. Our temperatures have warmed up this past week, however the wind on Sunday was outrageous! I thought there might be a chance we could blow away as it gusted from 20 – 40 km/hr.
My friend Tara also joined Cori and I for the run. I was really excited to show these ladies how much fun running on snow and ice can be! As we set off up the big hill the wind was at our back and it didn’t feel that bad out there. Once we crested the hill we were out in the open and the wind was hitting us hard. There was a sign on the pathway that was being whipped back and forth and I thought it might pull out of the ground and hit us! Running in that wind was not a lot of fun so I was grateful to have company. I tried to remind myself that it would be this windy regardless of where we were running.
Finding the race route was not hard, and soon we turned and started on my favourite part of the run – going down through the trees! The trees helped block the wind and I had a blast running down through them. Cori caught this great photo of Tara and I on our way in.
We exited the trees and then it was time to turn on for our second lap. The wind was no better this time around, but I tried to chat with the girls as much as possible in the hopes that we wouldn’t notice it as much. Nice try…sometimes it was hard to hear each other with all that wind! Before starting in through the trees we paused at the top of the hill for a selfie.
The sunshine was gorgeous but can you tell it was windy out?
Since Cori had 8 km on her schedule we ran through the trees, down the hill and back to the parking lot for 8 km. Cori was ready to call it a day at 8 km but I still had a bit more time on my feet required before I could call it a day. We grabbed a photo…
…then Cori headed off and Tara and I headed up the hill again for a bit more running. Tara is a spectacular hill runner so I let her pull ahead and I slowed to a walk up the hill. Then I gave myself a talking to and encouraged myself to keep running. I told myself this hill was good for me! We didn’t need to run a full loop this time so we shortcutted the pathway and came down through the trees one final time.
I think Cori and Tara had fun! Hopefully they’ll join me for future winter trail runs, although if the weather keeps along this same trend there will be minimal snow on the trails soon. You can read Cori’s account of the run here.
I was very happy to have a warm mug of tea waiting for me in the car after that blustery run. I really love my insulated Klean Kanteen for keeping my beverages hot for so long! I found mine in Calgary at MEC in case you are looking for one for yourself.
What did you get up to this weekend? If you were in Calgary were you fighting the wind on Sunday?
