I’m currently training for the BMO Vancouver Half Marathon on May 4th (in addition to building towards Ironman Boulder on August 3rd). My big goal for the race is to run a 2:15 there. My long runs are building now! This past weekend I had a 13 mile run on my schedule. Yup…13 miles…just shy of a half marathon!
I headed out to Edworthy Park to start my run on Saturday morning. It was beautiful and sunny out and I was excited! The run was going great. I wanted to avoid the pathway detour so I crossed to the south side of the river at Crowchild Trail. As soon as I hit the other side of the river the sun went away and the wind picked up. It wasn’t that pleasant to run in to but I figured I’d wind up with a nice tail wind on my way back.
The pathways were a lot clearer than last week so that made for better footing. I was surprised to see my pace was faster than last week and it didn’t feel hard! That wind was getting colder and colder though. Half way or so through my run I stopped to take a picture on the Edmonton Trail bridge…
…and noticed that the fog had rolled in and hidden most of the buildings downtown. Where did the Calgary Tower go?
I was on a mission on my way back and I really wanted to stay strong. There were times when I was running into the freezing wind and other times when it was at my back. If I was running into the wind I used it as motivation to keep pushing. If I had a tail wind that meant I needed to take advantage and let it push me home. For fun I figured I’d add on the extra 0.1 of a mile to see what my unofficial half marathon time would be…
2:18:43. On a training run! I was so happy with my run!! I realize talking about splits can be a bit boring, but when I checked them over post run I couldn’t believe how bang on my pacing had been.
Talk about a successful training run! I still have another month to go until BMO but that 2:15 goal is well within reach!
How was your long run this weekend?
I love seeing photos of Canadian long runs. I’ve never been to Calgary but I’ve heard it’s a great place to run!
Woo-hoo!!!! What an AWESOME run 🙂 Don’t you just LOVE it when a training run is at a great and consistent pace?! I took the weekend “off” and did x-country skiing and snowshoeing in Canmore 🙂 Ready to tackle my long-runs over the next few weeks leading up to the Calgary Half!
Nice job on your long run! I ran on Saturday as well and it started out sunny and quickly disappeared. I can handle the cold, but was hating on the wind!
Speedy run, awesome!! I did 30k around that same area on Saturday, I may have been too frozen to notice if I passed you 🙂
Way to go with the consistent pacing! I LOVE looking at my splits to see how I’m doing.
Awesome job! Wind is my least favourite condition to run in, I’ll take rain or snow any day over wind.
Nicely done! Those splits are amazing! Also? Way to go on running in the snow; I’m not sure I would have had the motivation to pull myself out on a cold day like that.
