It is supposed to be 24C (75F) here in Calgary today which pretty well feels like summer time weather to me! Today I am linking up with MCM Mama, My No Guilt Life and Run the Great Wide Somewhere for Tuesdays on the Run to share my favorite warm weather gear.
Skratch Labs Exercise Hydration Mix
As the temperatures heat up proper hydration becomes key. Skratch Labs is an all natural sports drink flavoured with real fruit. The taste is light and refreshing, and not too sweet. I especially like the Matcha Green Tea and Lemons mix for when I’m looking for a drink with some caffeine.
Insulated Lunch Tote with Ice Packs
Refuelling within 30 minutes of finishing a workout is the key to replenishing your glycogen stores and repairing your muscles. I love to drink a cold chocolate milk after a workout since it has the perfect ratio of carbs to protein that I need in a post-workout snack. Carry your chocolate milk with you in an insulted tote and never worry again about missing that critical 30 minute window. At the Goofy Challenge in January I popped a lunch bag with freezer pack and chocolate milk in my gear check bag.
If there is one item I wish I would have thought to pack in my transition bag at Ironman Boulder it would have been ChapStick with sunblock. I got a terrible sunburn on my lips complete with blisters. My lips were swollen and painful for days. Now I slather on the ChapStick with sunblock before I head outside.
When it gets hot out I want to wear running gear that feels lightweight and airy. The Oiselle Flyte tank fits the bill! It doesn’t matter how hot and sweaty I get, this seamless tank is comfortable and chafe free. I love the subtle bird print as well. This top is available at MEC.ca as well if you are in Canada!
What is your essential warm weather run gear item?
Lip burn is the worst!!! That and scalp burn.

Lip balm is SO important! I’ve run races where my lips were so dry and cracked, and it made me feel like I was even more dehydrated than I already was. It was a terrible feeling. Any kind of skin protection is a godsend!
Oooh, I love the idea of bringing an insulated lunch bag with you for runs! Very clever! Plus, the ice pack can serve double duty as something to hold against your forehead afterwards to help you cool off. =D

I love the idea of using the ice pack to pull double duty!

I notice on the Skratch Labs website that most stockists in Toronto are cycling stores. Is there something that makes it better suited to triathlon or cycling over running or is it just a marketing thing?
Hi Sian, Skratch was developed by the Director of Sport Science for the Garmin Professional Cycling team which is probably why you see it marketed in bike stores so much. There isn’t any reason why it isn’t just as great a product for running though! It has a really nice and light taste, yet still packs the electrolyte punch I need in a sports drink.

Team Skratch Labs and Team RacedayFuel (www.racedayfuel.ca) are hydrating all athletes in the Suburu Series of Ironman Canada. Runners absolutely do love Skratch, but it did originate from cycling back in the day.
I really like the lip balm from The Body Shop that has SPF in it. I have sensitive skin, and it’s one of the few that doesn’t irritate my skin.

I haven’t tried that lip balm from the Body Shop. I’ll have to take a look!

Looks like everyone else already seconded the chapstick with SPF. A warm weather must have for me is my running cap, my sunglasses and sport’s shield (to prevent chafing). If I forget any of these, it really changes the quality of my run.
I agree with you, a hat/visor, sunglasses and Body Glide or equivalent is also really key for me. My eyes are super sensitive to bright sun so I if I forget my sunglasses it always makes for a tough run.

For my lunch tote since it doesn’t get to go in fridge I have a sick bag I fill with ice. That way when it melts I just dump out water and refill w ice.

My must-have is Neutrogena Sport sunblock. It doesn’t sweat off or sting my eyes. Additionally, it comes in a spray so I can put it on my back without assistance, which is important (I run early in the morning and don’t want to wake my husband up to cover my back for me).

Yes to spray sunscreen! I find if I use a lotion I’m likely to miss places.
