Things have been fairly quiet here since getting home from Disneyland and the Tinker Bell Half Marathon. Both Neil and I wound up getting sick as soon as we got home. I had managed to avoid the usual cold and flu season so I was hoping this bug would pass quickly with some hot and spicy soup, vitamin C and lots of rest.
No luck…my view has mostly looked like this lately. Lots of snuggle time with Peat.
On Sunday I finally felt a bit better and so I headed out for my scheduled long run. I decided to run the hilly route through Bowmont Park and it was a beautiful morning out. I kept the pace fairly slow and easy and felt pretty good for the first 90 min or so.
After that the fatigue from being sick set in and the last bit was a struggle.
Maybe running 11 miles while still feeling under the weather was a bit of a stretch… On the plus side I tried two new flavours of Gu that I picked up at the Tinker Bell expo – Big Apple and Sea Salt Chocolate Roctane.
The Big Apple was actually quite tasty and the Sea Salt Chocolate was really good. If you live in Calgary I spotted these two flavours for sale at Bow Cycle this past weekend. Also at Bow Cycle? Skratch Labs Cookie Mix!!
Monday…aka Victoria Day…was a holiday around these parts. I met up with some friends for my first outdoor ride of the year. It was 9C when we started and would only warm up to about 13C so I bundled up. I wore a tank top, my Oiselle Wazzie Wool long sleeve, a long sleeve slightly heavier bike jersey and a wind vest, plus long tights over my tri shorts. I also wore full fingered gloves and a toque underneath my helmet.
For the most part I felt pretty comfortably dressed for the temperature, but the wind was strong and fairly cold. It was still nice to be out with friends though! We even spotted three deer on our ride.
I followed my ride up with a short brick run (my legs felt like noodles), then popped into the grocery store for a chocolate milk.
Then it was home to hang out with this guy!
How was your weekend? What did you get up to?
I’m linking up with Tara from Running ‘n’ Reading for her Weekend Update Link Up.
I just got back from Vancouver on Saturday and I’m now sick too. I think it’s something about planes and airports. There’s so many people going through it’s tough to stay away from germs. I’m hoping you’re feeling better soon!

Glad you are getting over the rude flu…mine came in April and I STILL have that odd dry hackig cough. Doc says its viral and will just go away. The puffer she gave me helps. I was also out in Bowmont for bit on Sunday. Lovely day. It warmed up and I went for a run at 1 on Monday- so needed a LOT less layers than you did on your ride. 🙂 gotta love a long weekend.

Tina, sorry to hear you are still feeling the effects of the man flu! That’s the pits. I think my cold is improving but it turns out I’ve got an ear infection that makes things fun.
Glad you made it out for some great runs on the long weekend!

Sorry you’re not feeling the best; hopefully you’re back to full health soon. I just love the pictures of Peat snuggling, he looks so content. Have a great remainder of your week.
11 more sleeps until my first full in Calgary. Super excited, nervous, ready and so many more descriptive words.
What a great running shot of you! Just got the wazzie wool in red…feels so good!
