It has been a busy week! I was out at the zoo for a work thing for a few days. It made getting in my workouts difficult, but on the plus side I got to see some of the newest residents at the Calgary Zoo.
Penguins!
One of the baby Red River Hogs! I was kicking myself that I didn’t have my camera with me so iPhone photos will have to suffice.

Recovering from an injury certainly is a roller coaster. The being in limbo is so hard. I’m signed up for races that I’m not sure if I can do. I have a training camp in May I’d really like to go to but how do I know if I’ll be able to? I’m trying not to get too attached to any of these events in case they don’t work out. I’m not trying to be pessimistic, more like realistic I suppose.
At the end of last week the swelling in my knee had gone down quite a bit but I started experiencing some pain while walking. The good news is that cycling and swimming didn’t bug the ache I was feeling. Being in pain was certainly a bummer though. On Thursday I went back to my physiotherapist and despite the discomfort she was really encouraged by how my knee looked. She reminded me that while it maybe felt like forever, it had really only been 2.5 weeks since the injury occurred. She still felt that I was on track for the 4-6 week recovery timeline that she gave me. She gave me the go ahead to try a few new activities (lower body strength – yay!) and encouraged me to keep stretching foam rolling and icing. She still doesn’t see anything that would indicate I’m going down the surgery route. At the end of the appointment she put in a few acupuncture needles and hooked a couple of them up to a small electric current to stimulate things. That was pretty wild!
Since my appointment on Thursday the pain in my knee has dissipated. I tried the elliptical for 10 minutes as a warm up before strength work and no pain! I did lower body weights with no pain! And I’ve also done a few more cycling workouts with spin ups and some slightly increased effort sets with no pain.

I’ve been feeling more optimistic about my recovery these last few days. I’m not 100% back but I’m starting to think that I might just not be down and out this season…
Good to hear! I just had that electro-stimulation acupuncture this week – I forgot how weird and tingly it feels!
That is all a good news story. I’ve had the accupuncture with the electric jolts, that’s lots of fun. Did they give you control of the intensity dial? For me, walking and spin was the issue, running didn’t seem to bother my knee. Which sort of freaked people out. Did you end up consulting Dr. MacDonald?
I’m so glad you’re feeling better! I’m trying to deal with a couple things with my body too, so I definitely understand how frustrating it is to want to do something but your body won’t let you.
What the heck? I just read about your knee pain and had to scroll back to find out what happened! You just woke up one day and it was swollen? WTF?!?!
Take care and heal up — races can wait — they are not going anywhere!!
Sorry Leana, I’m so behind on posts. Just getting caught up. Sounds like some good progress on your knee. Keeping fingers crossed that it continues to improve so we can get you on the road again soon. Glad you are still able to train in the mean time but hopefully you will be back to 100% ASAP!
i’m glad it’s getting a little better! hope things continue to improve. stick with your therapy (rolling, icing, etc) – that’s one thing i’m not the best at when i feel i’ve been “stuck in the trenches” too long.
Glad it is on the right track! Take care 🙂 And cute penguins!
So glad it’s improving!
The river hogs used to be my kids favourite animal, believe it or not. I need to go to the zoo. They still like them, even if the giraffes are now cooler.
I hope you’re still in ‘no pain!’
Injuries are no fun and I hope you’re managing to stay positive!
I’m glad you’ve had some improvement. Hang in there.
Glad to read that you’re showing some improvement. Keep up with your swimming and cycling, hopefully those activities will make your knee a little happier.
Thanks for sharing the video of the piglets…so cute!!! Mom is really odd looking, but she seems like a good mom!
