Swimming is bad for my knee

February 5, 2013 By: Runner Leana

The number one challenge with me and swimming is finding the time to go.  My husband and I share a car and carpool to work so my old 5:30 am swims are a thing of the past from before we starting carpooling.  When my husband woke up with a nasty cold on Monday and decided to stay home from work I jumped at the chance to get my early morning swim on.
My swim actually felt pretty good.  I had a few moments where things actually felt like they were clicking and I felt a bit of power in my stroke.  Not bad for an early Monday morning!  On my way back to the car I was feeling proud of myself for getting in the early morning workout and then my left foot slipped on a patch of ice.  It slid out beneath me rather awkwardly (but then when do you slip gracefully??).  I didn’t fall, but I sure did feel something stretch on the inside of my left knee.  It was the strangest sensation/realization ever.  I walked away from the patch of ice and I marvelled over the fact that surprisingly nothing hurt.  I got to my car, bent my knee and kicked my foot back and forth and all felt fine.  As I puttered about the office and went about my morning all felt good.  I climbed up and down stairs to go to meetings.  Everything was a-ok and no pain.
Because it was such a gorgeous day out I made plans to meet up with Kelly for a run at lunch.  Wow, did I have the most amazing run ever!  I was back in the 10:xx/mile range (compared to 12:xx/mile when I was Goofy training) and I was feeling good.  I didn’t feel like I was pushing it at all.  I had completely forgotten about that weird knee incident in the morning.  Yup, life was good!  Then as I walked back to my office I started to feel a sort of twinge in my knee.  By the time I had showered and gotten back to my office it was feeling pretty stiff and sore.  I was hobbling a wee bit as I went from meeting to meeting.  Last night I made sure to take care of it and ice it a few times.
Today the inside of my knee is still a little sore, but it doesn’t hurt to walk or move around at all.  It is really hard to describe.  Hopefully with some more icing and a little bit of a rest from activities that may anger it things will feel as good as new.  Fingers crossed because I certainly don’t want a repeat of last year!

Bummer about the fall! You’re right, this isn’t quite what I expected. Good that your swim is feeling strong. A lunch time run; I’ve only been organized for that once or twice.

I believe it was the run which caused the injured knee to worsen. Anyhow, it’s good to know that you have the proper sense of what to do. Rest and Ice were two parts of the self-treatment RICE method, which you can apply to your condition. I’m glad, though, that nothing worse happened, even if the treatment was delayed by a day; is my calculation right? 😉 I hope this wouldn’t cause any trouble in the future. –>Sienna
